Extra Edition - Gouki

Gouki, or Akuma depending on your country, is one of my very favorite Street Fighters. Just love his character design. So with this little sketch I was trying out a new rendering style, all cell shading with just a big outline around the entire figure. Could be fun to see it animated.

Ninjas Love Pirates

I was asked to do the program cover art for Katsucon 15 which takes place this February, Valentine's Day weekend. So I thought I'd do a really geeky love theme. Everyone thinks pirates and ninjas are bitter enemies, but that just isn't so. I had some room so I thought I'd throw in some more geeky love imagery.

Took a very loose pencil sketch and colored it all up in Photoshop.

"Fannie May Says $16B Aid Request Could Be Coming" is from the January 27 edition of the Express. Obviously, the bailout annoys me to no end. Banks are being rewarded for extremely bad practices. If any individual tried the same things, they'd be in jail for a very long time. So whenever I hear about my money going to the banks, I always think of a greedy exec lining his/her pockets just because they can. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Crossbone Love

It's pirate love! With hooks and skulls! And stuff.

This is a design for a tattoo that I stuck on one of my characters for a cover illustration. Decided to stick it on a shirt as well. I sketched it out in pencil and did some loose shading. Then I hit it with some Copic markers for tone and finished it off with a little Photoshop.

"Fed Plans to Buy More Fannie, Freddie, FHLB Debt" is from the January 22, 2009 DC Examiner. Am I the only one who thinks of a stripper when they refer to "Fannie" on the news? The bail out really annoys me because basically, corporations are being rewarded for bad behavior. If any individual tried to pull what the banks did, they'd be rotting in jail for a good long while, not getting millions of dollars of tax payer money. I would almost prefer my money go to a stripper. At least then I'd know I'd be putting someone through college. Distributed by Tubemogul.

I found an animation program for the DS, Animanitee, so I thought I'd work out some monster animations. I blew up the file size so it would be easier to see. I'll probably clean some of these up in Flash when I have some time.

A friend of mine wanted me to draw Doctor Doom. But I couldn't just do a regular old Doom posing all comic booky. So here he is delivering the bad news to Sue. I always imagine that Doc's bedside manner would be pretty good. He'd be the sneaky, devious doctor who convinces you to take that dangerous experimental treatment.

With so many people descending on D.C., a wall of port-o-potties may not be enough. Strolling Monster

I grabbed an animation program for the DS, Animanitee, and I did this little monster strolling along. The DS is quickly becoming my best friend on my morning and evening commutes.

Headline DS - "Jet Apparently Collides With Birds..."

"Jet Apparently Collides With Birds, Lands in Hudson River in N.Y." is actually the sub-headline of an article entitled "Passengers Survive Crash" in the Express for January 16, 2009. The only reason I can make a joke is because everyone made it out safely. In my head, I imagined the jet and the birds facing off like the Jets and Sharks in West Side Story, most likely because I just saw the National Theater production of the musical. It's also likely my brain is not quite ripe yet. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Headline DS - "Escapes From DC"

"Escapes From DC" is from the DC Examiner for January 15, 2009. So the eye patch is on the wrong eye, I didn't have a reference for the text, my Snake is more Solid than Plissken, and my post-apocalyptic DC is more post-rush hour, but here's Snake Plissken escaping from a blowed up D.C.

The article lists places for us locals to escape to for the weekend to escape the madness of the inauguration when a million people turn D.C. into a giant sardine can.

I have a small connection to Snake Plissken. Back when I was a colorist with UDON Entertainment, I had the opportunity to color the Snake Plissken book which was just about to drop. The current colorist was flaking out and they needed someone to pick up the slack stat. It sounded like a dream gig and the publisher was clearly in love with the project. Who could blame her. It's SNAKE FRIGGIN PLISSKEN! Unfortunately, the turn around time was insane. They needed the book colored by Monday. I met them on Saturday. No way I could turn it around in two days. I had to pass. Ah well. So there you go. Enjoy the inauguration if you're brave enough to come down. I will have the best seat in town, my couch in my warm, WARM, apartment.

Gundam Girl

This is my take on the Gundam girls.  She's wearing an RX-78 inspired jacket with yellow tinted glasses.  Kinda went a little overboard here with the soft brush, but I kinda wanted to see how far I could go with the Nintendo DS.  I'm pretty happy with the results, but of course, there's a lot I want to change.  Ah well.  Maybe next time.

"Clinton Urges 'Smart Power'" was the front page headline for the January 14, 2009 Express. The article focuses on her Secretary of State confirmation hearing in which she called for a more thoughtful foreign policy regarding the Middle East. But of course, any time there's "smart" in a headline, I just have to draw a brain!

"'I Think It's A Good, Strong Record'" is from the Express for January 13, 2009. Caricature is not my strong suit, but with such a good headline, I had to give it a shot. So this is Bush trying to spin something good out of his horribly tarnished record. The article is about Bush's last press conference in which he tried his best to defend his record. History will ultimately decide, but for now, let's enjoy Bush spinning some old school jams.

Bad Wolf

On AZM, I posted a story that said ABC might be picking up Fables as a television series. This may or may not be good news depending on a great many factors. Honestly, it will be very easy to screw it up. But here's hoping for the best.

As tribute, I thought I'd do a little fan art. So here's my interpretation of the Big Bad Wolf.

"Bride Holds Bouquet of Hot Sauce Packets" is from the Express for January 12, 2009. The blurb is about a couple who held a $200 wedding in a Taco Bell because they spent a lot of time there together. Now, having been through two of my own, I can say that an affordable wedding can be just as amazing as an egregiously expensive one. Besides, it's better to save up for a house or something rather than blowing it all on an insane wedding.

Orange Colored Glasses

Finally got around to creating an intro and outro animation for the show. Whee!

Couldn't help it. I had to draw a pretty woman. But I wanted to give her an accessory so I stuck the glasses on her head. And I can't stop drawing octopus lips!

So this really happened to me, except I was the idiot not dressed properly. In highschool, my Junior year Homecoming dance fell on Halloween. Being the creative soul that I am, I thought it would be fun to come dressed as a pimp. I got my disco bell bottoms, an awesome big collared shirt, fake gold chains, and a giant fake afro. I was all set to go. I drive on over to my date's house. She opens the door and she's standing there in a gorgeous evening gown, hair all perfect, makeup all done. And there's me. Looking like a complete idiot. What's worse? I was the only, ONLY, person dressed in costume at the dance.

Man, my highschool was full of stuffy people.

Funny Face

When most artists draw hot chicks, they always have a serious or seductive look on their face. So I thought it would be more fun to draw a hot chick with a silly face. Nothing is sillier than octopus face!

I've been sorely neglecting this little blog but I actually have been drawing quite a bit. I've started doing some sketching on my DS on my way into work and uploading the videos to YouTube. Just hooked up my account to this blog so we'll see if the auto updates work.

This is a shirt idea that never got used so I just put it up myself. You can pick it up over at MySoti. I really like the shrimp's pose. It's like one of those old time boxers. "C'mon, put up yer dukes!"

Monster Tattoo Prototype

I started doodling these guys at Anime USA over the weekend and everyone I showed them to loved em and said I should do a book. So I think I'm going to embark on a long ass journey to see if I can come up with around 200 of these guys for a proper sized art book. Maybe.

Meet Pooter

Throwing this up to every site I can think of. This is a short animation I did to introduce Pooter. Lots of fun. Going to try to do more as time allows. You can see the full resolution version over at Angry Zen Master. I'll probably create some kind of Flash player as I do more of these.

Apollo 7 Animated Comic!

This is pretty cool. I did this animated comic for the Apollo 40th Anniversary site on NASA.gov. It's also playing on NASA TV now! Hooray! I got a comic on TV!

Automa, NASA's 50th Anniversary Robot Guide

After months of insane work, we finally launched our interactive celebration of NASA's 50th Anniversary! Lookie, I actually get to do arts at work!

That cute green robot is Automa. I got to design, animate, and voice him for our project. You'll see him everywhere on the piece. I also did the exterior and interior designs of the 60's and 2000's as well as the overall scene matte painting and the future scene.

Whoohoo! This is a poster for my very favorite band, Peelander Z! They're playing a show in Baltimore on September 25 at the Ottobar and I was asked to a poster. So fun.
